Comprehensive School Improvement Plan

Rosamond's 2008-2009 Goals:

Goal 1: (Language Arts Focus) -- Increase Rosamond's Language Arts proficiency level from 83% to 84% through increased teacher use of the Balanced Literacy framework with a focus on increasing comprehension.

  • GOAL 1 -- ACTION STEPS
    1. Teach comprehension strategies to students.

FYI :The Comprehensions strategies taught throughout the school include: questioning, predicting, connections, background knowledge, clarifying, inferring, determining importance, visualizing, synthesizing, summarizing
Resources: Tips for Parents from NCFL | Reading Rockets Tips | Reading Comprehension Primer for Parents | National Center for Family Literacy

FYI: Monthly inservices are offered to teachers to discuss ideas for teaching the comprehension strategies. The book "Interactive Read Alouds" is used in this training.

    2. Provide Guided Reading instruction at student's instructional reading levels.
FYI: All teachers will complete the Fountas and Pinnell Assessment twice this year. This assessment identifies student's guided reading level. This provides a process for teachers to form small groups for reading instruction.
Resources: Guided Reading Book Lists | Leveled Book Database
    3. Increase writing experiences for students.
FYI: Monthly inservices are offered to teachers to discuss writing in the classroom. The series, "Units of Study," is used during the training.
    4. Provide tiered reading support to students.

FYI: Students not yet reading at grade level are provided daily intervention through 3 reading assistants and our reading facilitator.

FYI: Patty Bennett, our reading faciliator, received a grant and is working with nine 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade teachers to identify and implement intervention strategies within their classroom.

FYI: The "STAR" program provides volunteers for students to practice independent reading.

    5. Expose all students to Renzulli Type I and II activities and support individual students or groups to move onto Type III activities in content areas.

FYI: Assemblies fit into the Renzulli Type II activity. The Great Brain is considered a Type II activity.

Goal 2: (Mathematics Focus) -- Increase math proficiency level from 72% to 74% by improving comprehension of math content.

ACTION STEPS
1. Provide 1.25 - 1.5 hours of math instruction daily
FYI: Time on task is an essential element to math improvement. Math is often taught in blocks throughout the day. Primary grades count Calendar time and other interdisciplinary activities as math time.
2. Provide instruction and intervention in basic math facts.

FYI: We have implemented Corrective Math, an intervention program which focuses on basic math facts and basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division processes. Two math assistants provide small-group instruction for approximately 5 - 7 students per class. This direct-instruction program is offered 3 days per week for approximately 30 minutes. It is supplemental to the 1.25 - 1.5 hours of math instruction.

3. Implement the new math core.

FYI: USOE has adopted a new math core for the 2008-2009 school year. The math core is available at UEN.
Resources: Parent Guides: Kindergarten | First Grade | Second Grade | Third Grade | Fourth Grade | Fifth Grade | Sixth Grade

FYI: Curriculum maps and plans have been drafted by USOE as well as Granite school District which will be adapted for year-round use by grade levels.

4. Direct teaching of math content vocabulary.
FYI: Teachers are encouraged to post math vocabulary and teach it directly to students. You can view grade level specific vocabulary at USOE.
Resources: Grade Level Vocabulary Lists: Kindergarten | First Grade | Second Grade | Third Grade | Fourth Grade | Fifth Grade | Sixth Grade
5. Identify and provide math instruction and activities for accelerated students.
Monies have been set aside to purchase a program for accelerated students. The program will be optional for students.

Goal 3: (School Culture Focus) -- Increase community satisfaction as indicated on the Indicators of School Quality Survey (ISQ) in at least one indicator.

ACTION STEPS
1. Extend “Safe School Ambassador” Program and implement a bully-free program schoolwide.
FYI: Safe-School Ambassador Program is designed to empower students to make differences within their own peer group.
2. Review school code of conduct regularly and enforce consistently.
FYI: Code of Conduct
3. Initiate and support continued parent communication.
FYI: Money earned from the Box Top efforts are put towards the purchase of planners. These planners are used for the purpose of communicating student progress to parents. Teachers determine how the planners will be used in order to accomplish that purpose.
4. Acknowledge efforts of students that show school pride and/or demonstrate following the school code of conduct.

FYI: The Principal's 200 Club was implemented last year to acknowledge the efforts of students following the school code of conduct. Students are given tickets by the teachers. Students then receive a pencil and add their name to the principal 200 poster. Every three weeks, approximately 10-15 students are selected from the poster to participate in an activity with the principal.

FYI: The PTA sponsors a student spotlight program. Every three weeks teachers select three students from their class to be recognized and highlighted by the PTA.

5. Maintain cleanliness of school.

Goal 4: Use technology to create at least one project per teacher that demonstrates comprehension of content.

ACTION STEPS
1. Provide demonstrations of possible projects.

FYI: Rosamond's computer lab was upgraded this year with new computers and software. Teachers were trained on the programs and students visit the lab weekly to participate in technology acitivities.

FYI: Three teachers were selected to participate in the "Engaged Classrooms of the 21st Century." Kris Kimball, Peggy Coupe, and Lisa Cowan have access to digital cameras, a document camera, a projection unit, and a 20-station mobile laptop station.

FYI: Digital cameras are available in each grade level. Teachers frequently record activities and use the images to create projects.

FYI: Projection units are available in each grade level. At least one classroom in each grade level has a mounted projection unit.

2. Provide time to familiarize teachers with programs.
FYI: Trustland monies have been used to hire two computer lab assistants. The assistants attend monthly trainings and are familiar with available software. The assistants then help teachers learn the programs.
3. Share projects with other faculty members.
