Mountain Man Awards
Requirements for 2006-2007 school year

1st Grade

Complete 12 of 20 goals. Goals 1-10 signed off by a teacher and 11-20 send a note from home. At least 5 of the goals need to be completed at home.

1. Demonstrate responsibility by consistently taking home and returning reading books.
2. Demonstrate responsibility by caring for and returning classroom and library books.
3. Have no tardiness for a four month period.
4. Earn a 100% score on at least 15 spelling tests.
5. Master addition facts through the sums of 0-10.
6. Master subtraction facts through the difference of 0-9.
7. Write and illustrate 2 original stories and present one to the class.
8. Be respectful and kind to others in the classroom and during recess.
9. Use Super Student Skills at school.
10. Bring a favorite story to read to the class.
11. Know parent's or guardian's names and know phone number.
12. Participate in the Science Fair and share the project with the class.
13. Do a project to go along with any unit completed in class (Poster, diorama, model, special report, collage, or bring in information found on the internet).
14. Participate in the Reflections Program and share project with the class.
15. Help family with chores at least once a week without complaint as approved by parent.
16. Throughout the 1st semester (August-January) or throughout the 2nd semester (February-June) read 10-15 minutes 3 nights a week turning in monthly reading notes/ calendar or book notes to show completion of this goal.
17. Once a month participate in a physical fitness activity with family.
18. Perform 3-5 good deeds as approved by parent.
19. Recite 5 nursery rhymes and re-tell one fairy tale in own words.
20. Identify nutritious foods that are appropriate for breakfast and plan three well-balanced meals.

2nd Grade

Complete 12 of 18 goals.

1. Earn 10 100% scores on spelling tests.
2. Complete 100 addition facts (1-18) in five minutes with 100% accuracy.
3. Complete 72 subtraction facts (1-18) in five minutes with 100% accuracy.
4. Complete 35 hours of home reading verified by returning the home reading calendar. The calendar must be signed by a parent and the minutes totaled. 35 hours equals 2,100 minutes.
5. Memorize and be able to write your name, address, phone number (including area code), birthday, and parents' names.
6. Publish an original book including cover, title page, dedication page, text, and illustrations.
7. Earn 20 AR points.
8. Participate in the Science Fair.
9. Participate in the Reflections Program.
10. Complete and return 90% of all homework.
11. Have no more than 4 tardies for the year.
12. Memorize and recite three 2nd grade poetry selections to the class.
13. Spend 7 consecutive days without television, computer games, or video games, and write what you did instead. (See form on 2nd grade Web page.)
14. Earn a fitness award under the direction of your teacher.
15. Write 10 letters in correct friendly letter form. Letters must be approved by your teacher. (See form on 2nd grade Web page.)
16. Read 10 books on your reading level and complete a book report for each book. (See form on 2nd grade Web page.)
17. Demonstrate appropriate classroom behavior 99% of the time.
18. Read the 2nd grade sight words with 100% accuracy

19. Demonstrate appropriate school behavior by having NO RTC referrals and NO SAFETY PATROL TICKETS.
20. Develop oral communication skills by speaking in front of a group (i.e. during sharing) 10 times during the year.

3rd Grade

Complete 14 of 26 goals (1-19 signed off by teacher and 20-26 send a note from home).

1. Pass off addition facts to 18 as approved by teacher.
2. Pass off subtraction facts to 18 as approved by teacher.
3. Pass off multiplication facts 0-9 as approved by teacher.
4. Memorize 3 poems approved by your teacher (8 lines minimum).
5. Earn 90% or better on 20 spelling tests.
6. Earn 90% or better on 20 vocabulary tests.
7. Meet your Independent Reading goal.
8. Learn all lower case cursive letters and write them correctly.
9. Learn all upper case cursive letters and write them correctly.
10. Complete and return homework consistently.
11. Be tardy no more than 5 times and have no more than 5 absences for the year.
12. Meet your keyboarding goal.
13. Go one full block without being sent to RTC.
14. Complete 3 current events.
15. Participate in the Reflections Program.
16. Participate in the Science Fair.
17. Work is consistently neat and legible (Takes pride in work).
18. Helps out as a lunch worker at least 3 times during the year.

20. Do 3 CREATIVE book reports during the year.
21. Participate in at least 1 out of school organized activity, ie. Dance, gymnastics, soccer, football, baseball, music,
acting, etc.
22. Go one week without TV or playing video games. Make a list of activities you did instead.
23. Do an extra report or project relating to 3rd grade Social Studies or Science Unit and share it with the class.
24. Complete 3 days/week of physical activity (20 minutes a day) for 6 months. Does not include school activities.
25. Write 3 original stories (1 page or more) and give a copy to your teacher to share with the class.
26. Complete 8 hours of Community Service (Mowing lawns, reading to someone other than already assigned home reading, shoveling snow, washing windows, etc.) All of which has to be for someone other than your immediate family

4th Grade

Complete 15 of the 20 goals.

1. Accomplish addition fact goals as approved by your teacher.
2. Accomplish subtraction fact goals as approved by your teacher.
3. Accomplish multiplication fact goals as approved by your teacher.
4. Accomplish division fact goals as approved by your teacher.
5. Earn the 4th grade Handwriting License.
6. Complete a teacher directed written project or report.
7. Meet your Accelerated Reading goal.
8. Memorize 4 poems (at least 8 lines each) approved by your teacher.
9. Pass your KBK goal.
10. Earn 90% -100% on 20 spelling tests.
11. Create a model, diorama, poster, or other project pertaining to Science, or Social Studies that has been approved by your teacher.
12. Have no more that 5 absences during the year.
13. Be tardy no more than 5 times during the year.
14. Earn either the Presidential Physical Fitness Award, or the National Physical Fitness Award.
15. Memorize and play 3 recorder tunes, approved by your teacher.
16. Create a product with the AlphaSmart or computer, using word processing and the internet.
17. Give 10 hours of service for a worthwhile project.
18. Assemble an Art Portfolio containing at least 5 pieces of artwork.
19. Participate in 2 school and/or community visual or performing arts programs such as: school band or orchestra, Reflections, Science Fair, Night of the Arts, etc.
20. Provide a guest speaker for the 4th grade, who has expertise in a 4th grade curriculum subject, approved by your teacher

5th Grade

1. Have no more than 5 tardies all year.
2.
Complete and return homework consistently.
3. Earn 90% or better on 20 spelling tests.
4. Memorize 5 poems approved by your teacher.
5. Read at least 4 chapter books approved by the teacher and complete a book report or project on each one.
6. Write, illustrate, and publish a story and then present it to the class.
7.
Master 100 addition and subtraction facts in 5 minutes.
8. Master 100 multiplication and division facts in 5 minutes.
9. Present 5 current events to the class.
10. Label 40 out of 50 states on a blank U.S. map.
11. In your own words summarize the Gettyburg Address.
12. Do a project on "What the Pledge of Allegiance Means to Me."
13. Memorize the Preamble to the Constitution and explain what it means to you.
14. Learn the Bill of Rights and what they mean. Make a presentation on them and teach it to your family or class.
15. Plan, create, and do a project related to a 5th grade Science or Social Studies unit and share it with the class.
16. Learn to play a musical instrument and play a song for your family or the class.
17. Participate in the Reflections Program or school science fair.
18. Participate in the Presidential Fitness Program and pass off at least 4 out of 5 sections at the National Level.
19. Participate in either a non-school sport program (soccer, dance, football, etc.), or do an exercise program for 3 days a week of 20 minutes a day for 3 months.
20. Participate in a non-school community organization such as: Boy/Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Achievement Days, etc.
21. Complete 12 hours of a community service during the year that has to be done for someone other than your immediate family Examples: reading to someone, caring for children and not being paid for it, shoveling snow for a neighbor, volunteering at a senior home, cleaning someone's yard, etc.

6th Grade

Complete 16 of 26 goals (1-18 signed off by a teacher and 19-26 a note from home).

1. Earn 90% or better on 15 spelling tests.
2. Earn 90% or better on vocabulary workfor 15 weeks.
3. Read an Award book and write a summary or score 80% on an AR test.
4. Master addition and subtraction facts by getting (5, 100% 30 facts in 1:00).
5. Master multiplication and division facts by getting (5, 100% 30 facts in 1:00).
6. Master mixed math facts (5, 100% on 80 facts in 3:30).
7. Earn 90% of your Accelerated Reading goal.
8. Pass sixth grade word processing goals with mastery or near mastery.
9. Prepare a project and participate in the Science Fair or a Country Report.
10. Complete all assignments on time for two (2) straight blocks.
11. Go 6 blocks with no visits to RTC.
12. Be tardy no more than 5 times all year.
13. Participate in the school band or private music lessons.
14. Return 8 progress reports signed by parents.
15. Participate in 5 weeks of safety patrol.
16. Write, illustrate, and publish a story (class assignment).
17. Pass at least 4 of 5 areas of the Presidential Physical Fitness Program.
18. Participate in the evening performance of Shakespeare.
19. Participate in the PTA Reflections program.
20. Complete 10 hours of home reading each month for 4 months.
21. Give 10 hours of service to someone outside your family.
22. Go 1 week without TV, video/computer games and write a list of things you did instead.
23. Memorize a poem (at least 12 lines) approved by the teacher.
24. Participate in an organized sport, dance, drama, or singing program outside of school.
25. Attend a cultural event (symphony, opera, ballet, etc.) outside of school and write a one page report on your experience.
26. Run or walk 20 miles during any month. (Do not include running as part of a sports team)
