Jordan Ridge Elementary is designed to serve students from kindergarten through sixth grade. It opened in 1987. Current enrollment is 961 students. The school features self-contained classrooms with exterior windows and interior skylights. A media center, multipurpose room, cafeteria, office suite and specialty areas complete this modern, attractive facility. Portable classrooms have been erected to meet enrollment demands.
Jordan Ridge is a year-round school with four attendance tracks. Each track is in session for 45 days followed by a 15-day vacation. The school takes a common vacation in July. The school day begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:25 p.m. except on Fridays when students are dismissed at 1:25 p.m. to give teachers time for planning.
The curriculum meets or exceeds all District and state requirements. Teachers utilize Balanced Literacy strategies to teach reading and writing in all subject areas. Math is taught using a combination of Investigations as well as the Scott Foresman/Addison Wesley curriculum. Science and Social Studies curriculum are taught using both district and teacher-designed guides and materials using a hands-on approach. Curriculum is individualized and differentiated to meet the individual needs of students.
Special programs have been designed for students with learning disabilities, speech and communicaton difficulties and behavior disorders. One full-time and one half-time resource teacher are available to help students who are struggling academically. Part-time guidance and speech specialists are also on staff. A full-time Reading Specialist works with students who are performing below standard in each grade level. Jordan Ridge also runs the "I Can Read" program to tutor students who are struggling in reading.
Jordan Ridge is home to the Accelerated Learner Program (ALPS) for academically gifted students. ALPS is designed to accelarate the curriculum, to infuse creativity and critical thinking into curriculum, and to provide appropriate learning experiences for academically talented students.
