Student-Led Conferences

Student-Led Conferences, an important element in middle school reform at Joel P. Jensen Middle School, will be held Tuesday, 23 February 2010, from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Wednesday, 24 February 2010, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Parents and students will meet in the student's Advisory classroom according to appointments set up through Advisory classes. This innovative format for conferencing provides opportunity for students to gain ownership and responsibility in their own learning, to practice communication skills, and to celebrate student progress while setting goals with their parents. Students review their portfolios with their parents during the first 20-30 minutes of each hour. The remainder of the hour is open for friendly visits in the classroom of any teacher the parents wish to see. Students whose parents are unable to attend conferences during this time will be asked to take their portfolios home, conduct their conference at a convenient time, and return the information to the school during the following week.
