HELPFUL HINTS TO HELP BEAT THE HEAT
Students and Parents,
It's fall again and it is hot in our building once more. We would like you to know that our building maintenance staff has done and is continuing to do everything they can to help keep our building cool. This includes:
- Closely monitoring classroom conditions (along with teachers and administration).
- Increasing the night time air handler fan speed and duration at night to bring in as much cooler outside air as possible.
- Preventative maintenance on heating, ventilation, filters, sensors, motors and controls has all been done in anticipation of high temperatures the first few weeks of school.
- Closely monitoring all heating, ventilation, and fans to be sure they are operating properly.
In addition our teachers and administration will do the following:
- Closely monitor the Air Quality Index - if it is 101-150 accommodations for students sensitive to heat will include avoiding all outdoor physical activities (students or parents need to alert the school if there is a sensitivity to heat); if the index goes to 151-200, physical activities for all students will be moved indoors.
- Discourage the use of caffeinated products at school.
- Provide opportunities to put damp paper towels on their foreheads, around the neck and at the wrists of students suffering grom the heat.
- Relocate students and staff to different areas of the school building if some rooms have exposures or problems that consistently increase temperatures.
- Decrease physical activities for students, including physical education activities.
- Provide frequent fluid breaks, especially before and after exercise in physical education classes.
Things students and parents can do:
- Encourage the wearing of loose-fitting, light colored, lightweight clothing in hot weather.
- Encourage the maintenance of adequate cool, not cold, fluid intake.
- Freeze water in a water bottle the night before coming to school, fill with water and drink throughout the day. As long as studnets are not causing disruptions with their water bottles, all teachers will allow and encourage them in class.
- Encourage the eating of fruits and vegetables.
We hope for a cool fall, but want to be prepared if it is not. Please follow the above recommendations as closely as possible in hot weather. Parents and students should alert the teachers to any heat sensitivity the student may have.
Welcome back! We're glad you are here and we are looking foreward to another great year at Joel P. Jensen.
Thank you,
JPJ Admiistration and Staff
