MODIFIED BASKETBALL RULES
An official basketball team consists of 5 players: 2 guards, 2 forwards, and 1 center.
Offensive player: A player whose team has possession of the ball. The offensive team is trying to score.
Defensive player: A player whose team does not have the ball. The defensive team tries to prevent the other team fro scoring and tries to regain possession of the ball by guarding the other team.
Scoring: A field goal (basket) is worth 2 points and a free throw is worth 1 point. There are 3 point baskets, but no tin our games.
Jump ball: A jump ball is taken in the center circle between any 2 opposing players. The games is started with a jump ball.(not in our class) Each jumper must stay in his half and all other players must be outside the circle until the ball is tapped.
Handling the ball: A player may dribble the ball, pass the ball to another player, or shoot the ball. A player may take or tap the ball away from the player with the ball. The hands are considered part of the ball when holding it. A player may hold the ball for 5 seconds out of bounds and for 5 seconds when being closely guarded.
Alternate possession: When the ball is tied up, or a player form each team touches the ball at the same time for a few seconds – possession alternates back and forth. Possession also alternates at the beginning of each quarter.
Tie ball: 2 players from opposing teams have 1 or 2 hands firmly on the ball. The alternate possession rule goes into effect.
Out of bounds: The ball is awarded out of bounds at the sideline after a violation. The ball is awarded out of bounds at the endline after a basket is made or a free throw has been made.
Free throw: An unguarded shot by a player who has been fouled. Players line up from both teams at the 2 lanes. Two defensive players are closest to the basket.
VIOLATIONS
A violation is a mistake made while playing. The other team gets the ball and puts it in play across from where the mistake occurred at the sideline.
Jump ball violation: Failure to stay in your own half of circle until the ball is tapped. Tapping the ball more than 2 times or catching the ball after you tap it.
Out of bounds violation: Causing the ball to go out of bounds.
Line violation: Touching the boundary line with any part of the body while in possession with the ball or bouncing the ball on the boundary line.
Traveling violation: Taking more than 2 steps after dribbling has stopped, taking steps before you start dribbling, and dragging the pivot foot.
Double dribble violation: Bouncing the ball with both hands at the same time. Also, stopping your dribble, then starting to dribble again.
3 second land violation: A player cannot be in the free throw lane more than 3 seconds while his team has possession of the ball.
Fouls
A foul is unnecessary contact with a player from the other team. When a foul is committed against a player who is shooting for a basket, if made, shall count and 1 free throw will be awarded. If the basket is missed, 2 free throws will be awarded.
The following are individual fouls:
Blocking: Personal contact which interferes with the progress of the opponent with or without the ball.
Charging: Contact from a player with the ball moving his body into an opponent whose position is set.
Hitting the wrist or forearm of an opponent.
Reaching in, over, or around a player to try to get the ball away from him.
Throwing an elbow to keep another player away from the ball or to get better position.
Tripping, holding, pushing, or pulling a player from the other team.
Modified Rules
To prevent fouls and to keep better control of the game, no double teaming will be allowed. Only 1 person can guard the player with the ball.
No free throws will be taken.
The 3 second lane violation will not be played because of small courts.
No 3 point baskets will count in out games.
½ Court Rules
If your team gets the ball from the other team, you must always back court the ball past the back line of your court before your team can shoot for a basket.
Always back court:
After a basket is made by the other team.
If you steal the ball or intercept a pass from the other team.
When you rebound the ball after the other team misses a shot.
When the other team commits a violation, throw it in from the sideline, then back court it past the back line of your court before shooting.
When your team rebounds the ball after a player on your team shot and missed the basket, you DO NOT have to back court the ball. You can get the rebound and shoot again..
