For Foreign Language week, students were asked to write a paper explaining why it is useful to take a foreign language in high school and junior high. Her is the response from 7th grader Alec J.

Foreign languages are very useful to have. They have many advantages. For one reason, it will help you when you go to other countries or areas where they do not speak English. Another reason is that it will help your own English vocabulary. That last reason is that you must have a foreign language to get into college.

Learning a new language will help you when you go to other countries or areas where they do not speak English. Let’s say you are going to Mexico. You must learn to speak Spanish because hardly anybody knows how to speak English. They cannot communicate with you, and you cannot communicate with them. That could be extremely chaotic.

Learning a new language will boost your own vocabulary of the English language. Many words, such as bouquet, crème brulet, chocolate, hola, and also many other words in our language are Latin-based. It will also help with interviews and applications.

Learning a language helps you get into college. You must have two years of foreign languages to get into it. If you would like to get into a great college like Harvard or Yale, you have to have four years of a foreign language.

As you can see, it is very useful to have a few years of foreign language. It would help you if you got to another country or area where they don’t speak English. It would also help you with vocabulary of the English language. And you must have a few years to get into college.
