Welcome to the Soap Shop Simulation page! Here you can find out all about what the 7th grade CTE Intro students are doing in Mrs. Rees' class! This activity is probably one of the funnest things they will do in Middle School, and not only do they have fun, they learn all about creating a product, marketing it, and the business skills that go along with it! |

What is the Soap Shop Simulation? In Business CTE Intro, it is required that the students apply the skills they have learned into a simulation of running a business. Having a personal background in making soap, I decided to create a simulation in which the students design and create a bar of soap in groups. Then they create posters in Print Shop to advertise their soap, after they have named it, given it a slogan, and selected a price for it. The students create their soap in the kitchen lab, after having designed it the day before, and figuring out the production cost of the item. Everything they put in their soap has a cost--pictures, toys, scents, colors, etc. Then they decide what they will charge. This allows them to calculate their profit margin--how much they will make with each bar of soap they sell. Next we have a Soap Fair. The Soap Fair is held in the library during class. Each group sets up their table with their soap and posters, and anything else they've brought to "fancy up" their table. Then three classes are invited to attend, on from each grade level. The students then need to "sell" their soap by getting these students to vote for them as one of their top three favorites. Each vote is counted as a sale. After the Soap Fair, the students calculate how much money they made, mulitplying their profit margin by the number of sales. They make charts and graphs in Excel to demonstrate how they did, and what their target market was. If more girls voted, what grade voted most, etc. The Soap Unit has become a great, hands-on way of teaching kid about the world of business. At the end I require students to write a report about what they learned. And it is always fun to hear their comments about teamwork, good ideas, profit margins, etc. This is a great, fun activity, and a great way to learn about business!
