Auditions for the school talent show will be Tuesday, January 6th, and Wednesday, January 7th. If you are interested in trying oout, get started on your act now! The show is set to be on Friday, January 23rd. Here are some tips for getting into the show:

  • We are looking for VARIETY. If you have an unusual talent you are more likely to make it. Sometimes kids don’t make it—not because they aren’t good enough, but because there were so many other acts that were similar and we had to choose. Originality is very important.
  • You are more likely to make it if there are more people in your act. We want to get a lot of people involved in the show. Numbers where there is only one person must be excellent and unique in order to make it, and even then you might only make it into one show rather than all three.
  • Being in costume (if applicable) at the audition is also a help. We like to see that you are prepared and aren’t just doing this “on the fly.” You always look more impressive when you are in costume!
  • HAVE THE MINUS TRACK. If you are singing you CANNOT sing along with the original artist. You MUST have a copy of the music without voices. The easiest way to get this is to go to iTunes and do a search for your song with karaoke. You can download it for .99 cents, then you can burn it onto a CD. If you audition without a minus track, there is always the question of whether you can get it, or if it even exits—not every song has a minus track available. This can be a huge factor in whether you make it or not.
  • Singers: We get a lot of singers, and we get A LOT of girls singing love ballads. Those who sing upbeat songs are always more likely to make the show. We don’t mind a few ballads, but we pick the best of best.
  • Be aware that if you DO make the show, there’s a chance you won’t make it the following year because you have been in it before. This is because we want a different show every year, not the same acts all over again, no matter how good they are. Also, we want to give as many kids as possible the chance to perform.
  • Remember that this is a junior high audience. Be careful that the content of what you do is appropriate. Many students justify lyrics etc by saying “you hear it in the hall” but remember that anything we as a school allow you to do on stage, we are endorsing. As a public school in charge of the education of young minds, we cannot endorse acts that include inappropriate lyrics, costumes, or content.
  • Be sure that you have timed your act in advance. You will be asked on your audition sheet for the exact length of your act. You CANNOT have an act longer than four minutes. We usually have time for only 14 acts per show—so if your act is short, that can help us squeeze more in.
  • You are less likely to make it if you sing a cappella (without music.) It takes a VERY talented singer to be able to hold an audience by themselves on a stage without music. You are certainly welcome to try, but know that it may count against you.

Good luck to you all! We’ll see you at the audition!!!
