6th Grade
Welcome to 6th grade. This article will introduce some of the curriculum that will be taught at the beginning of the sixth grade year.
The first block of mathematics will focus on number representations, relationships, and number theory. The student’s goals include:
• Represent rational numbers in a variety of ways.
• Demonstrate proficiency in comparing and ordering rational numbers on a number line.
• Prepare for upcoming fraction work by developing fluency with number theory concepts.
Key vocabulary includes: factor, exponent, greatest common factor (GCF), least common multiple (LCM), least common denominator, divisor, prime, composite, and prime factorization.
In the second block, student goals include:
• Create models and illustrate meanings of operations.
• Develop estimation skills prior to demonstrating proficiency for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and mixed numbers.
Key vocabulary includes: equivalent fraction, simplest form, mixed numeral, and improper fraction.
Parents’ efforts at home to discuss mathematics with their children will increase understanding and proficiency.
Science this year will focus on the following standards:
• Standard I Phases of the Moon
• Standard II Earth’s Axis and Seasons
• Standard III Solar System Relationships and Attributes
• Standard IV Understanding of Scale, Size and Distance in the Universe
• Standard V Simple to Complex Microorganisms
• Standard VI Properties and Behaviors of Heat, Light, and Sound
