2nd Grade Soaring Eagle Requirements
Your student will have the opportunity to earn this very prestigious award this year. The Soaring Eagle is an award to recognize the amazing achievements of our students here at East Midvale Elementary. To earn this award your student must complete 15 of the following requirements. Please encourage and help your students in any way possible. Thanks for all you do for your student and our community.
- Maintain the standard of a good citizen- 10 Think Times or less for the entire year.
- Maintain 95% attendance for the year.
- Be on time- 5 tardies or less for the year.
- Enter the school-sponsored Reflections contest in November.
- Participate in the 2nd grade Talent Show.
- Participate in our class service project.
- Participate in an out-of-school service project and report it to our class.
- Demonstrate correct manuscript writing and maintain acceptable penmanship in all work.
- Meet the reading goal for the "book-in-a-bag" program for atleast 7 months. (Must return the bag atleast 12 times in one month)
- Advance atleast 3 levels in reading.
- Turn in weekly reading slips to total at least 3600 minutes at the end of the year.
(Read atleast 20 mins., 4 days a week.)
- Turn in atleast 30 math homework assignments during the year on time, not accepted for credit if more than 2 days late.
- Maintain an average of 85% in math.
- Be able to complete a 40-problem addition and subtraction test in 3 minutes or less.
- Maintain an average of 85% on spelling tests.
- Maintain an average of 85% on vocabulary tests.
- Read an appropriate level book to our class.
- Complete Presidential or National Physical Fitness Requirements.
- Participate in the dance festival.
- Publish 5 writings in Writers Workshop.
- Write an animal report at home: list 20 or more details about the animal and draw a picture of it. Arrange to present it to the class.
- Create, explain and display a poster board size science concept. Must have prior approval by the teacher.
- Participate in the school Science Fair.
- Create and display a poster board book report on your favorite story.
- Compete in the 2nd grade Spelling Bee.
- Activity of your choice. Must have prior approval.

Mathematics
| By the end of grade two, students understand place value and number relationships in addition and subtraction and they model simple concepts of multiplication and division. They measure quantities with appropriate units. They classify shapes and see relationships among them by paying attention to their geometric attributes. They collect and analyze data and verify the answers. |
