Welcome to First Grade!

Homework Requirements

  • Reading 20 minutes every day. The reading can be done by the child, or this can be a parent reading to a child or with the child.
  • Spelling words are given to the child on the first day of each week. On short weeks, with 3 days or less, there will be no spelling list. Tests are given every Friday or the last day of the week. Words are from Word Families. Students should study their words.
  • Math homework every Wednesday

First Grade Soaring Eagle Requirements

Each student must complete 12 requirements out of the choices below in order to receive the Soaring Eagle Award.
  1. The student will have 10 Think Times, or less, for the entire year.
  2. The student will have 5 absences, or less, for the entire year.
  3. The student will have 5 tardies, or less, for the entire year.
  4. The student will bring back a completed reading calendar every month.
  5. The student will know upper and lower-case letters, as well as the sounds they make.
  6. The student will have a spelling percentage score of 85% or higher for the year.
  7. The student will write and publish one story throughout the year.
  8. The student will return 90% of math homework for the year.
  9. The student will return 90% of spelling homework for the year.
  10. The student will be able to count by 1's, 5's and 10's to 100, and by 2's to 50.
  11. The student will pass off addition and subtraction math facts by completing a timed test with 80% accuracy.
  12. The student will take part in our community service project.
  13. The student will create a scientific experiment using the scientific method and display his/her work in our Spring Science Fair.
  14. The student will participate in our First Grade Talent Show.
  15. The student will participate in the school wide Reflections contest.
  16. The student will pass off 85% of the words on the sight word lists.

Math Standards (Goals)

By the end of grade one, students understand and use the concept of ones and tens in the base-ten number system. Students understand the meaning of addition and subtraction and add and subtract small numbers with ease. They measure with simple units and extend their understanding of geometric figures in their environment. They represent, describe, and interpret data and analyze and solve simple problems.
