Teachers in grades Kindergarten-6th grade meet with small groups
of students each day for guided reading instruction. Each student is
individually assessed periodically on their reading fluency, word recall and
comprehension as part of this literacy instruction.
Teachers are able to identify which students are reading above grade level
to enrich their reading experiences. They also identify those students are
struggling with their reading so that remedial services can be planned. All
students are placed in guided reading groups with three/four classmates
with similar reading skills and instructional needs.
Daybreak is happy to report that in grades K-3, 68% fewer students are
currently identified by guided reading assessments as reading below their
grade placement as compared to the beginning of the school year. There
are 60% fewer students in grades 4-6 reading below grade level than when
school started. Good work students & teachers!!
Parents can help their children improve their reading by listening to
students read aloud on a regular basis. All students should spend at least
twenty minutes reading each evening at home. When parents listen to
students they can ask questions to check for comprehension. Parents should
encourage students to sound out unfamiliar words and practice rereading
those sight words that don’t follow phonetic rules by creating flashcards.
