Council (CVCC) Meeting Minutes Conducting: Roberta Smith, Chairperson Wednesday, September 19, 2007 7:04 pm
8:40 pm Council Members Attending: Sharon Okumura principal Roberta Smith chairperson Sherri Freestone staff Karen Lisonbee staff Colleen Cook staff Evelyn Anderson staff Amanda Clark parent Terry Callahan parent Sylvia Isom parent Joe Bycroft parent Robin Seguin parent Carolyn Bagley parent The meeting was called to order at 7:04 pm. All were welcomed. All those present introduced themselves. Minutes: Roberta Smith presented the minutes from the last meeting. The minutes were then approved by unanimous vote. Treasurer's Report: Terry Callahan presented the budget. He explained that many of the teachers have received their "start up money" reimbursements. The amount per teacher is $50. The current balance in the budget is $2310.03. A concern about the Smith's business partnership was discussed. An amount of approximately $7200 is usually donated Smith's yearly. The new Smith's Earn & Learn payout to the schools now happens at the end of September. This year we only received $6500 instead of the regular $7200 in the past. We discussed our enrollment numbers in the program and how they have dropped considerably. Ideas were discussed regarding how we could get more of the community to enroll since it must be done yearly. A letter and an application form will be sent home with the students to encourage families to re-enroll. Roberta and Sherri will arrange for the note to be sent home. Reminders for boxtops, milk caps, and cell phones will be placed in the school newsletter. The budget was passed
unanimously. Principal's Report: Sharon Okumura presented a Land Trust DVD that members of the committee will need to watch within the next month. Copies of Canyon View's AYP scores were passed out and explained by Sharon. She explained how AYP evaluations are done and what can be expected in the future. Sharon also discussed how CRT scores are calculated and how Canyon View plans to address any areas of concern revealed by these test scores. Mrs. Okumura then mentioned how the community is changing and the volunteer base has dwindled. "I Can Read" tutor numbers have almost dropped to half of what they were in the past. Ideas were discussed of how more tutors could be recruited. Robin Seguin offered to contact Shelley Bennett and arrange to locate people in her neighborhood who might be able to help. The next topic discussed was the need for parking lot volunteers. Sharon asked Sylvia Isom if she would be willing to contact parents who might be able to help. Actual responsibilities of parking lot volunteers were discussed. Staff changes were then discussed. DeEtte Earl left Canyon View to work in Park City. Cathy Sunderland is teaching in that 6th grade position and was appointed by the employees group to serve in that position as a member of the Community Council. Faculty Report: Sherri Freestone mentioned that the microphone system that was purchased with money from the council has been received and will be available for the whole school to use. PTA Report: Caroline Bagley explained that the fundraiser income is currently being tallied and it appears that the amount brought in will be about much lower than what it was last year. Sharon mentioned that more funds maybe coming in on internet orders. Caroline mentioned that very few children and families actually participated in our magazine buying fundraiser. Ideas for new fundraisers were discussed. New Business: Amanda Clark brought up a concern regarding the use of PTA funds for chorus expenses. She felt that PTA monies should be used specifically for items that benefit all students and not just chorus members. The PTA funds are short and they would like the Community Council to pay for the expense of the buses used for chorus trips. Roberta moved that this item be tabled for now until the budgets of both the PTA and Council are firm. It was seconded and voted on. Questions or Comments: Dates for future meetings were discussed. Thursday nights seem to be a better night for most of the council members. The next meeting was scheduled for Thursday, November 15th at a new time of 4:00. The members of the council will see how that time of day works for everyone. Following meetings will be held on January 17th, March 27th, and May 22nd and the time of day for those meetings will be determined later. Ballots for new members in March and will be sent home with students and the results will be announced at the Spring Concert on April 24th. The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 p.m. |
